I've got an oil leak under the washing machine. Washer works fine. I believe this is a direct drive model. Never been in a washer before, but am a DIYer and ready to give it a try. From what I've read so far, could be coupler or transmission seal. What's best guess and how would I tell. I haven't tore it apart yet.

Hi,

First thing to do it take it apart and check.
If the oil is leaking on top of the transmission then it will get oil in the clutch and will start to cause problems with it spinning.

If the oil leak is from the side of the transmission were the coupler is then it could drip oil there for a long time before the washer ever starts acting up.

To repair any leak you will have to replace the transmission.

btw, that is a direct drive washer made by whirlpool for sears.

I was replacing the coupling on my sears kenmore heavy duty top load washer...had it on it's side and had to stop working on it. It sat for a week before I got back to it and the transmission oil had drained out. Can I refill it and how do I do it if that is possible? Based on what I just read, it sounds like I need to replace the transmission? Is that the case? Thanks for your help.

I removed the oil seal from the transmission where the coupler comes out. It was easy. The seal was about 11 dollars on this site. I added more 90 weight oil and put the new seal in. To remove the seal, I just hit it on an angle with a hammer and a flat head screw driver. It tilted to the side. After that it was easy to pull out. I put the new one on by using a hammer and a socket. Good luck.
