Too funny, it's my same problem! I pulled up on the agitator and it came right up. Now, I'm wondering if the freely-spinning plastic coupler is the culprit.

Default Agitator coupler

If you have a similar GE model the agitator coupler is that plastic cup that attaches the agitator to the tranmission shaft. It has a screw on the top which you will need to remove in order to replace the coupler. The coupler will be around $5 and it protects your transmission so it doesn't break from excesive torque. Hope this helps!
