Lately my Maytag doesn't always drain the water and spin during the extra spin; I have to manually move the knob to the RINSE cycle. It seems to work ok in normal cycle. Also the clothes seem to have lots of lint. We have had the washer 7 years and only started noticing this recently. The drain hose goes directly into a stand pipe and it seems clear and that seems to drain OK. I have cycled the machine with no load and it seems to work fine; all the water spins out properly in Extra Rinse.

Any ideas what to look for?

If you will post model number we may be able to come up with some suggestions.

It sounds like there is obstruction in your drain/pump system, but lets see what kind of machine you have and what you might check.

The model no is MAV7600. Does the top of the unit swing up without removing any screws?

Ok, use this service manual to see if you can access the drain and pump and clean things out.

You may have two separate problems, but let's see if cleaning and reassmble will work, as it is a no cost fix.

The top of the machine will flip up once you release the clips holding it to the cabinet. See the manual for where they are.

I cleaned out the pump and drain hose (they were very clean) and put a belt dressing on the belt. Some cycles come out great and others have water standing in the tub at the end of the extra rinse. It seems to work OK in normal rinse. If I manually go back to spin they spin dry but I have lots of lint. It seems to spin fast enough with a 3 1/2 pound weight in the basket. Could it be a timer issue? I think I only get the lint when I do an extra rinse.

I have to confess I am pretty much at a loss as to why the problem would be in the extra rinse. If the lint is gone at the end of the first rinse it should not appear again.

I'm still not convinced its mechanical. It seems to spin fine empty or with a weight; plus sometimes it comes out clean and dry all the way through. Also there is no noise associated with a bearing failing. When it fails, the tub is full of water at the end of the extra rinse cycle; as if there was no spin at all to drain the water. This seems like something in the logic didn't run the spin cycle; such as the timer even though the timer arrow shows it complete. Is there a simple way to test the bearing?

I doubt if it is bearing problem since it spins in regular time. Try to observe the spin in the extra rinse cycle and see if it is normal. It may be at the end of the day you have to replace the timer on speculation, or just not use the extra rinse cyle (or reset it to regular rinse if you want a second rinse).

Thanks, thats sort of my feeling also since all the mechanical things seem normal when they are isolated. Just this moring I ran a full load all the way through with extra rinse no problem; everything spun dry. I might try cleaning all the electrical contacts on the timer connection first before replacing it, just in case.
