There are black shavings under this new machine and the brake started squealing. Any thoughts?

I would get warranty service on this, seems like your coupler is going bad and you have dragging brake shoes, potentially a serious problem to get fixed soon.

The brake shoe cam rollers wear out due to cheap metal. Go to my article in the general talk section, page 3 "replacing direct drive washer brake shoes".

The motor coupler was fine. The brake shoes were a mess. Powder and particles all over the top of the trans and in the clutch bowl/pads. I put in a new brake tube and after 2 cycles all seems well. Why would new brakes self destruct like that? Also, I bypassed the lid switch to watch the cycles. I noticed that during an empty spin, the basket has a hitch to it. The spin is fairly smooth and then the basket jerks to the side at a rate of 2-3 times per second. Is that normal?
Thanks, George |

I have seen this a lot. Transmissions will develop a twitch like that, it is internal to the tranny. Only way to fix this is a new tranny, but it will be ok as it is. You can put a 6 inch long helper spring on the back frame to help this. It will firm up the suspension.

I have discovered 2 things during re-assembly. Not all drive blocks are created equal. Run the washer in spin after the drive block is installed to make sure that it is not way out of round. Also, if you try indexing the the tub on the block in 90 degree increments you will find a position that runs much smoother than some of the other positions (like a car tire and wheel).
