I have a Kenmore washer that during the spin cycle sometimes will not spin. Sometimes it does. On the times it will not spin, I open the lid, hear the solinoid click then shut the lid then it works fine. I have within the past year had to take the unit apart to replace the direct drive gears. Is it possible I did something to it or is something just needing replaced?

Assuming that it did run fine after you worked on the gears then I don't think you did anything wrong and the problem is probably a worn out clutch.
