ok, perhaps a little more info will help. i have removed the brake shoes and that did not help. the pulley will not engage when the belt changes direction. any ideas on what i should replace? can i check a clutch plate or springs or something in that assembly to see if thats broke?

You might have something caught in the tub. Pull off the front panel and shine a light in the spin basket and check.

the basket spins free and easy in both directions. should i take this all the way apart, does the stainless tub and the outer tub come apart easy?

Have never worked on this washer, but you can check it out at web site
www.applianceaid.com They say you either have a bad tranny pulley or worn
helix and washers above the pulley.
They say to pull the bolt and pulley off and add some washers, then assemble and turn the pulley in the spin direction, then the pulley will ride up the helix and
engage the clutch to turn the basket. Please post results.
