Model Number: 110.28732700 Brand: Kenmore Age: 1 - 5 years
When I moved my washer to clean behind it, I found that the floor was covered with oil (about 2.5 foot square). Washer is less than 2 years old and, so far, seems to be working fine (no odd noises...yet). From my research, the only component that could have been leaking oil would be the gearcase. Is this a common problem for Kenmore?? Although it seems to me that Sears should cover such an issue, they say that I'm on my own since I didn't purchase the extended warranty.
So...what's my best option? 1] Purchase the seals and oil and reseal it? Is this something that I could do myself with basic hand tools (I'm pretty handy and typically fix most things myself)? Or, are special tools required? Also, would I need a gasket to seal the case? And, with it leaking for so long, would the internal components possibly have additional wear which would make this the wrong decision? Any advice you can give me on this would be appreciated! 2] Purchase a new gearcase? Thanks, Dave Ads By Google Related Models Last edited by DaveJ : 11-27-2009 at 01:39 PM. |

Hi Dave
If you otherwise like the machine I suggest you replace the gear case. Your situation is not typical, but it does happen and I think you will be happier with the replacement gear case rather than trying to fix it. If you decide to go that route it is a somewhat time consuming task, but it does not take special skills, tools or experience. Here is the part. Part number: AP3096209 and here is a site that will show you how to take your cabinet off to get to it. After you remove motor and the agitator, the transmission will come out by take out three screws. YouTube - Direct Drive Washing Machine Repair Video Tutorial *Watch in HIGH Quality!*

Brian, thanks for the post....I sent an email to the address you provided and look forward to hearing from you.
Sidfink, thanks for the advice, part number, and link to the awesome video on YouTube - I appreciate it!! The video makes it look easier than it probably is, but it gave me the confidence that I certainly could replace it myself. -Dave |
