my top load stops with a squeal at the end of the spin cycle, I assume that it is the brake, how hard is it to replace?

Probably you snubber ring, a white plastic ring under the tranny bottom. Remove front panel and sprinkle some corn starch while tilting the tub to expose the ring.

Thanks for your input, I ended up taking apart the complete brake assembly for inspection, then greased thrust bearing, cleaned out dust and applied talcum powder to snubber ring and brake.
