Default Transmission Out on GE Profile Washer
Model Number: WPGT9360E0WW   Brand: GE   Age: 1 - 5 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

My washer began making a very loud clicking/grinding noise when it spins counterclockwise during the wash cycle. I had a repairman come and he listened for about 2 minutes and said it was the transmission. Now they have called to verify that we want the parts ordered. They said I needed a housing unit for $165 and a starter (maybe stater) for $185. Do these parts make sense for a transmission problem? When searching for parts I don't even see these and not very many parts are that expensive. Thanks for any help before I get taken!!

As one who has only worked a couple of times on this model, and not very successfully I can only give you a partially uneducated opinion.

I think the only way to diagnose your problem is a tear down, and to put the service techs in the best possible light I would say they were making an educated guess and trying to save you the money of a teardown and an expensive repair.

You can see the parts, the stator and its housing on diagram 3. And here is a service manual for your machine so you can educate yourself on it.

This is a fairly complex machine, and given the cost of the repair even if you were able to do it yourself I think you are better off replacing it.

Let's see if someone else has a different idea?

There is not really a transmission in this machine but I am sure he just said transmission because that is what we are use to calling these type parts.

This washer can be very hard to diagnose. With that being said the stator usually donít give any trouble but then again I wasnít the one who checked it so I canít say.

Typically the clutch or clutch coupling will cause this type noise on this machine. Sometimes the rotor will come loose from the housing and cause a noise in which case tightening it will fix your problem.

I shouldnít say this and I hope you donít get offended but I donít like this machine at all. I talked so much junk about this machine my company decided to stop selling it. I had to work on every one we sold several times it is a good thing we didnít sell many. I usually recommend repairing most anything but I wouldnít spend much money on this machine but it is up to you. Hope this helps!!
