Has anybody ever split the dryer from the washer in a Thin Twin?
My daughter had her washer fail, and we have found a front loader to replace it. But we are thinking that we could remove the thin twin dryer from the broken washer and use it. The controls are on the bottom face of the dryer - below the door. We figure we could wall mount it with some brackets. Have not taken it completely aprt yet. Removing the angle cover reveals that the brackets look easy enough to remove. I was concerned though about the electrical supply. Does the dryer have its own line going out for 220? I have not looked closely at it yet. And I do not know the model number.

will try to get one tomorrow and add it to this post.
thx for any advice

If you want to continue to use the dryer on the Thin Twin I would just leave the machne in place. You can use the dryer part even if the washer part has failed. Other than appearances I don't think you gain anything by taking the machine apart, and you run the risk of causing some type of problem.

The 220/240v that comes into the machine is really two 110/120v lines. One 120v line powers the washer and the motor and other parts of the dryer, and the 240v powers the heating element.

In our area you can buy a nice used dryer for around $120-$150, and sometimes less so if you want a stand alone dryer that is what I would do.

Im curious why you don't just have the washer fixed ... I have repaired almost every part on my customers thin twins over the years and have found them fairly easy to work on ... Plus the thin twin is a whirlpool design and dispite their small size tub they have shown to be pretty good machines.

Default Possible to Separate Thin Twin - followup

Good questions both, and my answers:

sidfink43 -
Yes - this is the current operation: using only the thin twin dryer in an intact combo unit. But this has tom be temporary. It is now in the small bedroom and there isn;t enough space to keep walking around it. In the W/D closet, there isn't any room for either keeping the thin twin intact or adding a side by side dryer. (small house) The need is for a dryer that can be mounted above the used Bosch front load washer, that fits well in the closet
And although buying a used dryer is possible (i have found several for $50-100), the idea was to save the money and find a way to reuse the thin twin dryer on its own. Also, all the used dryers I was finding had the controls on the upper part of the front face plate. And since my daughter is 'vertically challenged', the lower mounted controls on the thin twin are a big advantage.

gabe_1981:
My daughter has used the thin twin w/d for about a year. During that time the control knob on the washer has become more and more flaky. She has had to rotate it at random to try and find the right place for the function she wants the washer to do. I think she said she put some tape on it to mark the positions. (not sure of the details) and that helped for a while. But when the washer stopped pumping out the water. She was sort of releived that she could have a reason to replace. I'm not saying that it is not repairable, and we are pretty handy folks - so a repair is not out of the question for us to accomplish on our own. But this machine is pretty old and the idea of spending $100+ on it for repair doesn't measure up to getting a newer bigger washer for $200.

I appreciate the advice that I will need to keep the 220 line coming into the unit. When I get started on the project, I'll also post my findings.

Ok, I understand what you are trying to do, and I do not see any reason why it cannot be done.

Here is the service manual for the Whirlpool Twin Thin, but since you say yours has the control mounted on the lower portion I am wondering if you do not have a Frigidaire model?

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Servic...6_4314124A.pdf

Good luck, let us know how it turns out, and if you need a different manual.

Default Frigidaire FGX831CS0

I think your right - it must be the Frigidaire FGX831CS0

Here is a link to an available parts manual:
http://www.fixya.com/support/p63583-...d/manual-17830

And it has a wiring diagram - so I think I can get started.
thx again
