Model Number: RAS8245EW0 Brand: Roper Age: More than 10 years
Agitator will not turn. Heard a snap when starting the final spin cycle and that's all she wrote. There is a small pile of black debris under the coupling between the motor and the transmission. The motor seems to run fine in response to the controls. Should I finally just replace this baby?
Thanks, Mike PS. Can anyone tell me how old she is? Got her with the house.<g> Related Models |

Well, you can spend at least $350.00 including tax and delivery for a new machine, or you can spend about $16.00 including shipping on this part and take an hour of your time and repair it and have a machine functioning as it was before. Your choice.
Here is the coupling. Part number: AP3963893 and here is a video which will show you how to make the repair. YouTube - Direct Drive Washing Machine Repair Video Tutorial *Watch in HIGH Quality!* Submit a serial number and we can tell you how old it is. Probably around 7-10.

Sid...,
Thanks so much for that. And what a terrific video! You make it a touch choice.<G> I'll go over my daughter's and drop the motor this AM. However, there was something else I forgot. I could not tourn the agitator at all. Is this normal given a snapped coupling? SN is - CF2001747 Thanks again, Mike |

The agitator should not be hung up, but let's see how things are after you look at the coupling. It may be that your transmission or something else in that area failed, causing the coupling to fail in which case replacement may well be in order given the fact that your machine dates from 1996.
When you get the motor off see if you can turn the shaft from the transmission in each direction.

Sounds good.
Since you are worried about it, I would also take off the agitator and make sure the dogs or any other internal part are hung up. You should be able to do this by taking off the top and the cap, and taking out the screw that holds it down.
