GE drain pump stuck on
My GE top-load washer was accidentally run with the water supply turned off. It reacted to this by running the water pump continuously even though there was no water to drain, and the machine refused to respond to any user controls. Even after unplugging the machine for several minutes and plugging it back in, the water pump would continue to run.
I figured out what was happening and how to fix it. I'm posting here for the benefit of others:
Some GE washers have a "feature" where they will lock out all user controls for a period of 3 minutes after being run with the water supply turned off. The user manual describes this, saying that the 3-minute lock-out even persists between power-outages, restarting the timeout when the machine is plugged back in. The manual doesn't say anything about the water pump running continually. My instinct was to unplug the unit to prevent the pump from wearing out, but the solution was to let the pump run for more than 3 minutes, after which the machine would respond to user controls again. Running a normal wash after 3 minutes made the pump turn off and the machine was back to normal operation.
