Default Can't Get the Gearbox Back IN
Model Number: 110.15842400   Brand: Kenmore   Age: 1 - 5 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com
While chasing a problem with the washer not fully spinning the clothes dry I removed the gearbox/clutch assy to check the clutch. Now I cannot get the gearbox/clutch assy to mate with the mounts. The clutch assy appears to be bottoming out on the basket drive assy but the gearbox is about an inch from it's mounting points. What am I doing wrong?

Two possibilities.

One is that you do not have the plastic cam that releases the brakes in the correct position. The second is that you do not have the transmission oriented in the right direction.

I have spent some frustrating times making these mistakes, so keep trying.

Thanks Sidfink43. I was able to get the gearbox back in. The problem was the brake assy had dropped about an inch, a result of dropping the gearbox without unbolting the agitator first I guess. I was able to force the brake assy back into position and things seem to be running fine until the machine goes into the spin cycle. During the spin cycle everything goes out of balance. I have checked the springs and leveled the machine.

Yep, that will do it. Glad you got it figured out and back together.

Thanks also for the update.

Sidfink43, Unfortunatley I have not been able to fix the violent agitator during spin cycle. Is there a chance that when the brake assembly dropped that it messed up the basket drive block or something else ? The spin cycle starts out normally but as it gains speed goes violently out of balance.

Thanks for the help

Can you tell us what the original problem was, and when you say violent agitator do you mean the agitator is moving, or is the tub moving rather wobbly and noisy.

If it is the tub the problem is typically the springs. You cannot tell anything about them by looking at them, you have to replace all three, which is a pretty good idea even if they are not the problem.

I have occasionally forgotten to take out he agitator bolt when removing a transmission, but after I went back and did it nothing seemed to be harmed, but I don't know what happened in your case. I doubt if it is the problem, so replace the springs and see how that works out.

The original problem was I dropped the gearbox to check the clutch as the machine was not spinning the clothes entirely dry. It is the tub that is going nuts. It may be that when I laid the machine down it overstretched the springs. To get the gearbox to mate up I had to lightly tap the brake assy back into the brake drum with a wood block and hammer. I do not think it messed anything up as the wash cycle seems to work fine. So I will order some new springs and see if that stops the problem.

Thanks again for the support and advice.

Found another post in your fourm that had a similar spin shake problem. Turns out the suspension plate had shifted when I laid the machine down to work on the gearbox. I followed the instructions in the post and reset the plate. everything is good. Thanks again for all the help.
