I need some help troubleshooting. During the spin cycle on my whirlpool washer, the agitator makes a noise and then will stop and start again. When it stops there is a loud noise like gears slipping. I thought initially it was the clutch so I replaced it, but I am still having the same sounds. Also when I take the agitator off and just watch the spin cycle, I can actually see that transmission shaft (it is threaded) stop and start again. I am now thinking it is a bad transmission. I have had this wash machine for over 20 years and I am thinking if it is the transmission, it is not worth the expense of the part.
