Model Number: 110.20922990 Brand: Kenmore Age: 5 - 10 years
Hi,
Our nine year old washer is making a rattling or grinding sound. Water fills and drains, but the auger does not spin. Last week i replaced the lid switch with success and now it is acting up again. Listen the attached sound clip to hear the sound. The big question is whether to repair or replace considering it's 9 years old. Thanks Related Models |

I am very much on the side of repairing these machines if you can do the work yourself. They do a good job, last forever and the parts are inexpensive and easy to replace.
You need to diagnose the problem first. If the machine spins the problem is likely in your agitator dogs, which are plastic cams with a ridge that cause the machine to agitate. Here is a site which will show you how to look at them and replace them. YouTube - Broken Whirlpool/Kenmore Washing Machine Agitator Fix If your machine will not spin, the problem may be a busted motor coupling. This video will show you how to go after that. I have replaced the dogs in the last year. is the rattling sound a telltale for the motor coupling? i realized i forgot the attachment the last time , so attached it again.

I don't know, but I think it is worth the time to take it apart and look at the coupling if it does not spin. If it does spin then the coupling is ok, and you then need to see if the motor is operating during the agitation cycle. If so, the transmission is likely the problem. If not, the motor, timer or wiring can be the issue.
