Maytag Centennial Alternating Between Cold and Hot Water in Sensing and Wash Cycle

My Maytag Centennial washer is set to the cold cycle for washing. It begins filling with cold water in the sensing cycle, then begins to agitate. After the washer agitates for a couple of minutes in the sensing cycle it then again fills with cold water, but after about 20 seconds or so the cold water turns off and the hot water begins to fill the tub. It then switches back to cold and then back to hot again in 20 seconds intervals. The washer eventually fills to the correct water levels and begins the wash cycle where this switching between cold and hot sometimes occurs, but not always.
I read this washer will mix a little hot water even in the cold wash cycle, but I just wanted to ask if this switching back and forth between hot and cold water is normal. I live in the north where the outside temp is below freezing so the incoming cold water to the tub is about 48 degrees. Thanks for your help.
