Maytag Centennial - sudden stops, motor burn up

I have a water efficient top loader washer. When sensing the load, the motor will spin the bucket and then slow to a stop but keep running and then overheat with the electrical burning smell. I had the back open when it did this and I can spin the bucket with little effort. I have also experienced this during the spin cycle as well. Nothing is clogging the pump, the bucket spins with little effort but the motor keeps burning up. I am wondering if it is the crank case (transmission) that is bad and needs replaced. Is there a way to fix the crank case without having to spend a lot to replace it? I am hoping for some input before I get a new one and find out that it was not the issue.
Thanks!
