My Hotpoint toploader will agitates and pumps water out, but will not spin. Any suggestion as to what parts I should check/replace first? I don't think it is the lid switch as I was hearing some new squeaking sound just before it stopped working. Any help is appreciated.

Since you hear the noise I am assuming the motor is running but if you find that it isn’t post back!

You need to check the belt first. At times transmission can leak water or grease on the belt and prevent it from getting a grip. This will cause the belt to slip and burn off or wear out. So if the belt is worn out check for a water leak and see if grease is on the belt. If grease is on the belt a new belt will only buy you time the transmission will have to be replaced. If water is on the belt you will have to figure out were the water is coming from.

If the belt looks ok you need to check the clutch. Sometimes the clutch will slip too much causing the problem you are having. If the clutch is slipping but the washer isn’t spinning you may have a bad clutch but remove the belt and attempt to turn the transmission pulley by hand. It should turn freely both ways and if it doesn’t the transmission may be locked up. If it does turn free both ways replace the clutch. Hope this helps!
