Model Number: Neptune Brand: Maytag Age: 1 - 5 years
I have a Maytag Neptune washer that has an awful smell coming from it. It's about 4-5 yrs. old and was part of a class action lawsuit. They only gave me $250 to spend on a Maytag product. My machine was only 1 1/2 yrs. old at the time and I didn't want to buy a new machine with a dryer to match! I now leave the door open and have the boot replaced every 4-6 mos. which costs about $100. Any cheaper options?
Thanks. Related Models |

I wish there was another option. The mold/mildew that collects on the boot on this model is the fungus from hell. Nothing takes it off.
I can only suggest you wipe down the boot after every wash, but ultimately you may have to replace the machine. It is just the washer version of a total nightmare.

I have this washer -- it is awful -- the ONLY thing I could do was to completely remove the plastic ring around the front of the washer tub (held in place with metal clips). First I had to remove the front of the washer, lift the top out of the way, which includes removing the detergent holder. Then you remove the rubber gasket from the front, but leave it connected to the tub portion.
Slip a screw driver under the metal clips around the rim of the tub and twist to release the clips. Then pull the plastic ring off and out of the machine. There will be a nasty pink fungus all around the back of this ring. I scrubbed it down, hosed it off and then proceeded to clean hoses etc. I have to do this once a year -- but it has helped tremendously. The maytag repair people gave me a wire scrub brush to clean the area -- absolutely no help. Placing the clips back on the ring was difficult, needed to have my husband replace the rings. Good luck |
