Older Kenmore Front Loader motor trouble
Model Number: 417.84988800 Brand: Kenmore Age: More than 10 years
Love this washer...sure hope to keep it going.
The motor does not turn the drum. The motor moves slowly/not smoothly with the belt off in the same fashion in both CW and CCW directions in accordance with the timer 'slow' mode positions. In 'spin' mode, the motor moves the same way..slowly and somewhat erratically (jerky). 'Slowly' meaning not even a 1/2 revolution in five seconds. After about 10 seconds of trying to turn, the motor shuts off. I presume that to be an over-current protection situation.
I have a spare motor control board from a previous 'THAT didn't fix it!' event. I swapped that in. No change.
Both motor brushes look fine. A manual twist to the motor and the bearings/commutator are smooth and quiet.
An earlier repair to this motor involved the speed transducer/tachgenerator. The magnet had come loose from the motor shaft, the symptom being the motor ran too fast during a 'slow' (wash) function. I JB'd the magnet in place. It's been fine for years. The magnet is still in place, a voltage is generated on the tachgen output wires with a handspin of the motor.
Resistance between commutator segments is around .4ohms. At 180º on the commutator it's about 1.4ohms. No segments look any different resistance-wise one from another. While THAT part is good, I did expect higher readings than I got. Certainly I'm no motor guru. I don't know if such low readings are OK or not.
I'm hoping this is a fairly common DC motor/front loader issue that someone has seen plenty of and the answer is a 'fer sure. I am not looking forward to spending a months income on a new washing machine!
Thanks for the opportunity to ask!
**edit** Don't see the model number I put in showing..a duplicate won't hurt.
