I have an older Kenmore washer model 11092586410, that will fill and agitate, but will not, sometimes, drain and spin.

More often "will not" lately.

Only one motor, connected directly to the transmission, with a coupling that is good. No belts.

Water pump is connected directly to the back of the motor.

The way this works " I think " is that the motor runs in one direction for agitate and the other for spin and drain.

Is this assumption correct ?

So, I am thinking either the motor control board or the timer is defective.

Thanks

On this model if you can hold the lid switch down and put the unit into spin you want to check when it doesn't if it's a heavier load it could have a bad brake and clutch, or a bad spin tube assembly, or a bad transmission. All of which can cause the same issue.

As I see it, as the water pump has no solenoid to control water flow, so the motor must be ran in the opposite direction from the agitate mode for the spin mode and water pump to operate. If the motor runs in spin mode the water pump would drain the tub, unless the motor locks up via the transmission when in spin mode. If that happens the water pump won't operate and the tub would not drain, which it doesn't. As the water pump is directly attached to the rear of the motor.

Would any of the above replied items cause the motor to freeze, or lock up while in the spin mode ? "bad brake and clutch, or a bad spin tube assembly, or a bad transmission"

With the motor removed, I can turn the the motor coupling to the transmission and the tub turns fast as if in the spin cycle.

thanks

Check your lid switch. It will not spin if the machine thinks the lid is up. Let me know what you find

Pulled the lid switch, checked it with an ohm meter, on the bench and again in the machine opening and closing the lid. Switch was an open circuit with the lid up and a closed circuit with lid closed.

I'll try a test load in a few days before doing anything else.
