I'm getting a nasty semi-grinding noise when the washing machine spins. I know it needs an agitator tune-up/overhaul but even with the agitator removed the shaft isn't spinning consistently and makes a pulsating grinding noise. I'm assuming it's a bad clutch or transmission. Hoping to diagnose the issue quickly.

Following several online tutorials I removed the entire agitator, unclipped the pump & set it aside, removed the transmission bolts (left the motor attached), and the transmission + shaft slid out about 3-4 inches but won't budge beyond that. Won't go back in either. About an inch of the shaft is still visible inside the tub. Is there something else I need to do on the tub interior to clear the way for the end of the shaft? Any secret pro tips for getting it out?

Any assistance/advice is greatly appreciated!
