The washer won't start in any fabric setting position except spin. I have power to the machine. The door switch still cuts off the spin cycle when I open it. The dryer works fine. Over the phone, a technician said it was probably a bad timer. He looked it up and told me that Whirlpool had bought them out and that parts were no longer available, that I should junk the machine and buy a new one. On ********, it appears that there are many parts still available and I would like to repair the machine but I don't want to buy something without knowing for sure what is wrong. So - I would like to know exactly how to open the unit, if there is a way to troubleshoot the problem and how to identify the bad part and fix the machine. Is there any help out there?

So, the washer does not even fill? If not, you need to open the front panel and check the fuse on the left side of the cabinet. With timer set to start a wash cycle and level set to small, does the timer advance on it's own even though it won't fill with water?

Eric The machine will not start at all. I don't even get a hum when I pull the start switch out.

Check the fuse. The washer will not fill if it's blown and if it is blown, you probably also have a faulty lid switch.
