Agitator would not move during wash cycle, heard squeal noise and smelled & saw smoke. Filling cycle worked fine, as well as, spin and drain cycle.
What fix is recommended?
Do belts need to be replaced?
Does the agitator need to be removed?

Operate it with the front panel off and confirm that the motor is turning. If so then it is likely the transmission is the problem, in which case replacing the washer is probably your best option.
