Twice this week the timer had rotated to the stop position but the tub was still full of water. Any idea as to what could be wrong? Slipping belt or bad timer?

Take off the front panel and inspect the internal drain hoses for a partial blockage. Then remove and inspect the pump. Finally, operate the machine with the front panel off and see if you can tell what is happening during the drain cycle. Intermittent problems are the worse kind, so you will have to be luck and catch it when it is having the problem.
