My Washer transmission went out but the dryer works great and has a new belt.
Can this unit be separated and still work? I would mount it on the wall and place a new washer below it.
Also, can you recommend a good top loader washer? I need to buy one.

They are not made to be separated, and I do not recommend it for safety and other reasons but it is certainly possible. Here is a link to the service manual for this model which may help you. http://www.emaservicetips.com/pdfs/488_3.pdfOn the washer side any of the major brand basic top loaders are good, but you should absolutely stay away from anything with electronics in it.
