Washer timer dial stuck, agitates too fast, not draining

This is an old machine-10-20 years old. Mid cycle it stopped working on Delicates. The timer will manually spin, but the only place we can get a response from the timer is the Normal timed cycle and then the timer freezes and the washer vigorously agitates at a high speed until we turn it off manually. On all other timer settings, the washer makes a low buzzing sound and does nothing else. The machine won't spin or drain at all. Three days ago, the machine overflowed and we thought it may have been caused by a dial setting that was set half way between small and medium load. Any suggestions on what could be wrong? Is it time to get a new washer? Thanks.
