My GE washer is about 7 years old. If you look up the model you will notice S1070A2WW and S1070A4WW but no 3WW. Probably a Sam's club special.:o
Anyway the hub that is screwed to the bottom of the spin basket has shattered. I guess our water is getting very hard with minerals and causing a lot of corrosion.

Anyway I have ordered the replacement part, but I am not sure if I need to do anything before reinstalling relative to greasing. There is a lot of gooey junk piled up on the spindle just below the hub. I don't know if its grease or just slime from the washer. Should I clean it all off, do I need replacement grease, something I can get at the hardware store??

There is no need for new grease however I do recommend cleaning everything before reinstallation. If you run into any problems dissembling this washer this page will help GE Washer Disassembly Guide
