I have a Whirlpool washer that fills with water but will not cycle through any of the other stages. When I close the lid I can hear the control panel making some noise every so often but the panel knob doesn't move and the water remains. At no time do I hear the motor running with no agitation. What are the possible causes to this issue?

Will it drain or spin if you manually advance timer to spin?

No. After it fills the control panel hums for a little and then stops. The lid switch seems fine because every time is open the washer the humming stops. When I close it the humming begins again.

But no. Advancing the timer doesn't make it spin or drain.

You will need to remove the cabinet and check the wiring at the motor connector and motor overload switch. Faulty connections here are common. Unplug the motor connector and check for burnt/corroded terminals in the connector housing and motor switch. Also check the thermal overload on the motor, it has two wire terminal connections on it.

Ok. I took the cabinet off and drained the water to check the pump. Lo an behold there's some baby clothes in the pump. If I clear the pump should that fix the problem? Or has that caused some other problem? Is there any easy way to clear the pump? I've got it off but these little clothes are really stuck in there.

That worked. Removed clothing from pump and it works with no problem. Thanks.

Good job, easy fix. Had you mentioned that the motor was humming, I would have suggested a jammed pump but you said "at no time do I hear the motor running". Keep that old direct drive going, they don't make them any more (except for commercial use).
