Bought a house a couple years ago that came with a Whirlpool Duet WFW9150WW00 washer. It has begun knocking really loudly when washing towels, blankets, etc. The counterweights and springs and shocks are all in place, and the tub nut seems fine, so I'm assuming the some/all of the shocks need to be replaced.

The odd thing is that this model comes with 3 shocks, but I looked underneath and it looks like there is room/slots for 4. (The shock on the right side crosses over to the middle.) Would it hurt/help anything to add a 4th shock?

Also, is there any real way to test a shock to see if it needs to be replaced? I searched this forum and nobody really says how to actually test a shock.

This model should have four shocks, two in front and two in the back.

So go ahead and put in the 4th shock and make sure the other three are in the right positions. If it is still having a problem you will probably have to replace the other three and the springs.
