Default Spin?.....Not really, sort of, sometimes!
Model Number: 500   Brand: Kenmore   Age: 1 - 5 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

Hi Guys!
I'm new here and after watching a few incredibly helpful videos on YouTube...thanks Matt!!, I decided to make my own repairs ( and register here once I saw the link ). BUT, I'm still having issues. I changed the drive block to resolve the no-spinning issue ( agitates and drains just fine ) and that seemed to have made it more "hit" than "miss". A few days later, I replaced the clutch. Worked great for about 1/2 dozen full loads then reverted to more "miss" than "hit". Now, I've checked the lid switch ( it's fine ) and with the cabinet off, I bypassed the switch and with a little manual assistance, I can get the drum spinning no problem when it's in cycle. What would be my next step? The coupler? Would that allow agitation without spin if it were worn or damaged? How about the brakes and brake tube? I have limited room to work on it so I would rather not be pulling it apart every few days and naturally, the least expensive fix would be the best!
Thanks for reading the long winded post.....but I do look forward to input from the pros!

PS. I don't know how vital this little bit of info may be, but.........when it has been allowed to run full cycle and has NOT actually spun on it's own, I find that I can rotate the drum by hand ( at least a half a turn even with the new clutch and block ) before I encounter resisitance. Sometimes, it will spin from this point ( on it's own ). Other times it won't engage and after "missing" I can manually spin the drum again until I meet resistance. Hope that can shed some light!

fairbank56 has a spectacular aura about
Default

Need the actual model number. Run machine with cabinet off and lid switch bypassed. When it should be spinning but isn't, observe the clutch hub. If it's spinning, the motor coupler and gearcase are fine. With clutch hub spinning, look up into brake hub to see if drive tube is spinning. You would see the brake shoes and brake spring spinning. If drive tube is not spinning but clutch hub is, then the clutch is slipping. Where did you buy the clutch?

Default Think I got it!

Thanks for the input, but I think I figured it out. Seems to be the drive tube that is the issue here. Everything works as it should ( clutch, transmission etc. ) but the drive block itself doesn't seem to tighten down quite enough on the tube. At least not enough while under a load, anyways. It has some significant wear visible in the area the block sits. I'm guessing it's due to simple wear and tear over the years. So, that's the next thing on the list!
Thanks
PS. I got the clutch and block from a local parts and service dealer and they are the exact same brand as seen in the videos.
