Question Whirlpool Top load Washer clicks loudly in agitate mode and spin
Model Number: SM 8525079   Brand: Whirlpool   Age: 5 - 10 years

Washer is just a normal top-load washer. Direct Drive. First, it didn't move at all. It would just make the noise of running. Turned out that the coupling was split, and I replaced it. I put it all back together and ran it. Once it went into agitate mode, it started making this loud clicking noise every agitation. At a steady pace like 2 per second. Then when going into spin cycle it started to spin at a slow pace and slowly ramped up to desired speed, like it needed to use the momentum to reach speed. With the increase in speed, there was an increase in clicks, proportionately. I've had this thing apart several times, trying to find the problem. I checked the motor by turning it by itself. Coupling is still good. Brakes and clutch appear to be in decent enough shape. Nothing appears out of order. I even put coupling on gearcase and took my drill to it and heard nothing and looked fine. But i do not believe it was an appropriate test. Two more notes: Does not happen 100% of the time. More like 95%. One of the times i took it apart and put it back together again, I started it empty in spin and it went for about 15-20 seconds perfectly. Then back to clicks. Ran a medium load and it did clicks 100% during agitate and about 75% during spin mode. The other note: during agitate and spin, it there is definitely a loss in strength. Agitate doesn't even make bubbles anymore and also what I said about the spin mode.

Sounds like a faulty motor switch. Place it in the very last minute of permanent press cycle final spin. This should be high speed spin that bypasses the fabric selector switch setting. If it does the clicking there, I'm pretty sure it's the motor switch. Remove the cabinet, disconnect the motor connector, remove screw from motor switch and pull switch away from motor. Check for continuity between where the orange wire connected and the blue/orange wire connected. Should be zero ohms. If it's open or reading high resistance, that's' the problem.

Sorry it took so long to update. I work long hours many days.
So I checked the things that you had me check. I ohmed out the switch and all appears well. Also took it apart since it was just the red plastic cover. saw how it worked and it checks out.
Also, probably the largest clue to this mystery:
When you said if it does click during the cycle final spin...
Well, the washer does not click in the final (super fast) spin. What does that mean? I look forward to your answer, and do apologize for the untimely response.

Does it do the clicking in normal cycle during the last 5 minutes of wash agitation just before first drain? If not, looks like a bad fabric selector switch or faulty wiring/connection associated with switch. If it does do the clicking there, looks like a bad timer. Have you tried different speed settings with the fabric selector switch?

Problem Solved:
I really looked into the motor switch. When I took it off, I noticed that the second terminal was bent over and touching the first terminal (the one with the black wire coming out of the motor to.) There was a little bit of black where they were touching. I straightened it out and carefully plugged everything in and reconnected everything. Then, tried it out again. There is no loud clicking noise and the strength of the washer is back to 100%. Thanks Eric. You just saved me a couple hundred dollars.
To sum things up: Original problem: broken coupling (probably caused by too much stress on the motor like a large load or tangle within washer.)
Second problem: Me plugging connector to motor wrong after investigating and fixing original problem.
Eric, you were right from the very beginning about something with motor switch. Thank you again kind stranger.
