I have a GE GTWN5050M0WS infuser washer, which overflows (via the Flood Hose) whenever I put in a large load. I had a someone look at it and he thought the problem was the Mode Shifter. He said the travel of the drive pulley during agitation was too long. This is an infuser type model with a pulsator vs. a typical agitator (not sure if this makes a difference). He mentioned that the mode shifter is a common problem with these washers. I checked the led on the motor for error codes and there were none, just steady on/off. I also checked the impedance of the shifter coil and it is 70 ohms. Obviously a long history of problems with both the motor (or specifically the inverter) and mode shifter (amazing they got away without issuing a recall). Also, I don't know when GE changed the design. Mine is a 2011 model. Do you think it's the mode shifter or could it just be something like the flood gasket? I would appreciate any thoughts, suggestions or questions. Thanks!

Does it overflow during fill because it's filling up too high or does it only do it once it starts agitating? If it only does it during agitation, remove the magnet from the lid and place it over the lid switch so you can operate it with the lid open. When it's agitating, does the basket agitate as well? This is what happens if the mode shifter fails and can cause a large fill to overflow out the flood hose.

Once it starts agitating. I had it working with the front cover off for a while to see what was going on. Good suggestion on the switch. I will see what's happening with the basket during agitation. Interesting that the mode shifter seems to check out, i.e., no error codes, resistance probably within acceptable limits. This has been going on for almost as long as we've had the unit. I will check out the basket movement and reply back. Thanks!

Eric Overflows during agitation through the flood hose. Did as you had suggested and observed the agitation cycle. The basket moves about 1 1/2" in each direction. Also, the pulsator turns approx 1 and 1/2 revolutions for each half of the agitation. Thanks for your help!

Sounds like the water level is simply too high. The rotation of the agitator is normal for that washer as is the slight movement of the tub. With tub empty, remove the pressure hose from the air pressure dome on the lower left side of the tub and check for gunk buildup in the hose and air dome. Clean out as needed. If that is not the problem I would replace the pressure switch behind the control panel. Another possibility is broken tub damper straps. They are black rubber straps at the top of tub in each corner. You can see/feel them with front panel removed. If they are broken or stretched out, they can cause the whole tub assembly to swing too much causing the water to slosh excessively. Make sure the four suspension rods are in place as well. We have the same one and the same problem so we were told to just not use the large load and that worked, for a while at least but now every setting floods the house and the repair guy said there is no good reason for it, that the washer needs to be replaced.
