How does the transmission in this old Kenmore washer know when to shift from agitate to spin? Should it be spinning at all times when pump is running? There does not seem to be any electrical or mechanical linkage to the tranny and it does not seem to go into spin when it should. I am suspecting the clutch is bad

The timer will remove power to the motor to stop agitation. It then starts the motor again in reverse direction for drain. It should drain without spinning for a couple minutes. The motor should stop again for a few seconds and then start again continuing draining but should also start spinning. The gearcase has a neutral drain mechanism that is all mechanical. The pump runs any time the motor is running. In agitate mode it is running in a direction that does not pump the water out. In drain/spin, it is running in a direction that does pump the water out. If the washer won't spin, run it with the cabinet off and lid switch bypassed so that you can observe the clutch hub. When the basket should be spinning, the clutch hub should be rotating. If it is but basket does not spin, it could be the clutch, broken brake cam driver, stuck brakes, worn drive block...etc. If the clutch hub is not rotating, the gearcase is faulty.
