Default Recovering from Lid Switch Bypass Mistake
Model Number: Kenmore Series 90   Brand: Kenmore   Age: More than 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

In a failed attempt to fix my Kenmore Series 90 washer, here is what I did:

The washer spin cycle stopped working altogether. All other cycles worked fine. On the spin cycle, it did nothing (no motors running).

I assumed the Lid Switch had failed. I mistakenly bypassed the switch by connecting the center green/yellow center wire (ground) to the tan wire.

Now the washer does nothing at all. No noise. No motor. (no smoke either!) I didn't blow a fuse. There is still power to the washer outlet. (I also correctly wired the bypass by connecting the two outside wires - still nothing. Also does nothing with the Lid Bypass Switch unplugged).

I assume I damaged the timer or timer circuit. Do you think this is a correct analysis? Can you recommend how to proceed? Parts to buy? Thanks!

Sounds like you may have shorted out the timer or motor from what you did mixing the wrong wires..........Look for scorch marks or burning on both items and you should see an obvious damage.

Default Lid Switch Bypass Mistake

I would also have expected to see some scorch damage, but haven't seen any. I'm going to try replacing the timer unless anyone else has a better idea. Thanks!

What is the model number of your washer? On older direct drive models, depending on model number, connecting the tan and green/yellow wire together will not cause any damage unless your in wash cycle with tub full of water. If in spin cycle, it wouldn't do anything.

The model number is: 11020902991

Currently, the tub is full of water. The two outside lid switch wires have been wire-nutted together. (I am assuming the lid switch is open when the lid is open and closed when the lid is closed?). The washer does not react in any way regardless of how the timer switch is positioned and/or activated. Thank you for your help.

On that model, connecting green/yellow and tan while in spin mode won't do anything. If you placed the washer in wash mode with these wires connected together and tub is full of water, then you directly shorted the hot side to ground. This would trip the panel breaker, blow a fuse and/or blow out a timer contact or washer input wiring connection. Same thing would happen if you connect the green/yellow wire and gray wire together while in spin mode. Suggest you trace the power cord black wire inside the control panel all the way to the timer connector looking for a bad connection. If nothing found, then it's likely the timer. Continuity checks would quickly locate the problem though.
