My kenmore washer is making a squeaking sound during the spin cycle. Kind of like when a belt is going bad. Does the 500 series have a belt or could this be bad couplings or maybe bushings that need replaced or lubed. Would like to know what I'm getting into before I open the machine up

This is a Whirlpool direct drive design, no belt. Could be something in the drain pump or something between the tubs. I would remove the cabinet, jump out the lid switch, pull the pump from the motor (leave drain hoses connected) and run it in spin to see if noise goes away. Noise could also be from worn/broken suspension damper pads. It will be easier to localize the noise source by running it with cabinet off.
