This will be the 4th time I will be replacing the actuator in this washer! I have no idea why this part keeps breaking down. It works good for a few months then it conks out again. Same freaking error code every time! I was told these parts are sensitive and that the slightest hint of water or moisture can cause this part to go bad. Has anyone had to replace this part more than once for this brand and model of washer? I'm very annoyed by this and do not want to have to replace it again. Whirlpool did nothing except state I should purchase a warranty and that there machine is not defective. I am planning to raise the washer this time around to try and avoid any future issues, with a pallet from home depot that I will cover with a plastic tarp like sheet. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I can tell you that the shift actuator is a very high failure item on these washers. Many tech's carry spares all the time and don't even bother with doing diagnostic's tests. It's easy to replace so they just swap them out and most times the problem is fixed. These machines are junk. There are many failures including shifters, lid locks, broken wires, loose connections, bad capacitors, faulty control boards, bad transmissions...etc. Wiring breaks are very common at wire tie-down points. Check the wiring harness under there where the wire ties are. An intermittent connection may cause the shifter to fail. The shifter has electronics in it as it not only shifts the splutch between agitate and spin but also has the rpm sensor to detect basket speed. Whirlpool should at least own up to the shifter probem but apparently, once out of warranty, your out of luck.

That's "great" to know. I've only had the washer for 3 years and so many calls to get it repaired since. I have seen the technician make an easy switch each time he's done it. 15 mins tops. I'm sure there are instructions on this site as to how to do so without screwing it up myself. I'm just not sure if I'll have all the tools. Thanks for input, it is appreciated.

All you need is a 5/16 nut driver and a phillips screwdriver. Very simple to replace. See video.
