The washer spins and drains fine, but does not agitate. It makes a grinding sound like it wants to move but can't. When I hold the drum still, the agitator is frozen.

Given that it spins this suggest the belts and motor are fine and that the problem is in your transmission.

I think this calls for a new washer, as the cost of repair here is close to what you can get a basic top loader for when they are on sale.
