My Whirlpool Roper washer machine knocks when it is in the washing cycle. I don't know why its doing this. When the washer machine makes this noise, it spins the clothes counter clockwise. Its not supposed to do that, its supposed to agitate them.

If it is agitating and spinning at the same time, along with the sound it may be that the brakes are hung up. Take a look at the Sticky at the top of the main washer repair page on direct drive brakes. You will need to take out the transmission, which is not as difficult as it sounds.

A good video on how to do this is in the video library. Look under Whirlpool direct dirve washers, which is what your machine is.
