My Maytag washer began making a knocking sound during the agitation cycle only. The knocking increases in speed when on heavy duty cycle but decreases when on light cycle. The noise appears to coincide with the speed of the agitator. The knocking does not appear to affect the operation at this point, but I am concerned it may lead to failure if not corrected.
Any ideas what may be causing this?

Well, sorry that is happening. It is difficult for us to diagnose a noise. For an unwanted noise we really need to be present to hear it and try to locate the source.

I suggest you remove the agitator (click on your model number and you will be taken to a set of exploded views of your machine) by removing the upper cup and taking out the screw bolt that holds it on. See if you can determine any damage or cause for your problem. Then clean it out good and put it back on and see if the noise is still there. If so, try to locate whether or not it is in the agitator or transmission.

Let us know what you find out and maybe we can offer some more advice.

Good luck.
