Default Spin Cycle works on small loads but not big ones
Model Number: wle4000b1ww   Brand: GE   Age: More than 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

Hi Guys,

I just signed up but I want to say that I appreciate these forums and all the help you guys give.

For being 10 years old our washer stll functions pretty well. Over the past few months when the spin cycle would kick on it would get really loud and sound like an airplane taking off.

As my wife was doing laundry today she called to say that the spin cycle wasn't working at all. I opened it up and looked around and everything seemed nominal. I emptied the clothes out and the spin cycle worked fine. I reloaded the clothes and ran a rinse cycle. Agitation worked fine but when the final spin clicked on it would start spinning at a low rate but it never got up to speed and eventually stopped (motor was still running).

I took out half the clothes and tried the spin again and it made it up to speed and finished the cycle. The load was pretty big but not overloaded or anything more than we usually put in there.

I didn't hear anything like slippage and the motor sounded ok. I was going to check the belt tension but beyond that I don't know what to look at. My first thought is that the transmission isn't getting enough torque to turn the heavy load.

Thoughts? Ideas? Thanks guys!

Dan

Run it with the front panel off. Observe the motor pulley when it is in spin mode. There is a clip on the bottom of the motor shaft below the pulley. If the clip is spinning but the pulley is not, then the clutch is slipping. The clutch is inside the pulley. If the pulley is spinning but belt is not turning, then the belt is slipping either because it's loose or it's old and glazed and needs replacement. The loud noise could be the lower transmission bearing or the tub bearing. After running it in high speed spin with nothing in the tub for several minutes, feel the lower part of the transmission (the stationary part just below the rotating part). If it's hot to the touch, the lower transmission bearing is probably faulty. There is also the possiblity that the brake cam is not working properly and not fully releasing the brake.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the suggestions. I ran the unit with the front panel off. The belt looks good and is still tight and doesn't seem worn. There is nothing there that would indicate slippage. The pulley and clutch seem to be working and as I said the agitation works fine and the spin cycle works with small loads but as soon as it gets heavier basket tries to spin and might make a few rotations.

Next load my wife does I will try to watch it and see what is happening. Any other suggestions?

With washer off, rotate the motor pulley clockwise (viewed from below) by hand. Use two hands to keep it going. It should be easy and this should be turning the belt, main drive pulley, transmission (the entire transmission housing rotates) and basket. If it is very stiff, you either have a bad lower transmission bearing, bad brake cam, slipping brake cam spring, bad tub bearing or clothing caught between the tubs. You have to use two hands to keep it going because as soon as you let go the brake will engage.
