Default Kenmore Elite 70 will agitate, not always spin
Model Number: 11022702100   Brand: Kenmore   Age: 5 - 10 years

The washing machine performs all functions properly, but will not always spin. It had been making quite a bit of noise and "clunking" when transitioning between cycles and leaving clothes wet, so the motor coupling and clutch assembly have been replaced. Amazing how quietly it agitates now, but it still "clunks" before spinning. It will sometimes spin on its own after wash and rinse cycles, but not always. If I open the lid while the water is draining (start of the spin) it will begin spin and be fine for rest of cycle, although noisy. Any help in pin-pointing the problem would be appreciated!

The washer has a neutral drain gearcase. It's supposed to drain without spinning. After drain, the motor should pause for a few seconds which releases the neutral drain mechanism and when it starts again, it will continue to drain and spin. When you open/close the lid, you are pausing the motor. These Whirlpool direct drive washers normally produce a clunk sound when going into spin mode however without hearing yours, can't say for sure if what you are experiencing is normal. Is there an additional noise in spin mode after it gets going? Maybe post a video on youtube.

I have spent the last several days trying to video the washer doing its thing and of course it has turned shy! The only thing I know to do is explain a little better. If the washer is going to spin the clothes at the end of the wash or rinse cycles, it will begin draining and within a couple seconds do its "clunk" and begin spinning (with a full tub of water). When it spins on its own this way, sometimes it stops with a slam after the water has been spun out, pauses, then begins again normally as it dispenses the water on the spinning clothes. It will continue to fill and agitate for the rinse cycle normally, but the same thing happens at the end of the cycle ... if I do not lift the lid when the machine drains, the spin would not begin. Do I need to take the shell off and watch the clutch as in some of the other recommendations even though we have replaced the clutch or could it be the timer or ...?

It should not spin with the tub full of water. It should drain for a minute or two before going into spin. If it's starting to spin a few seconds after it starts to drain, there's a problem with the gearcase or the timer is causing the motor to pause when it shouldn't. Need to see and hear it for myself.

I will see if I can coax the washer out of its 'stage fright' and post a video, the laundry is piling up, anyway! Thank you for your patience.
