Washing machine stops in mid-spin cycle

This is a Maytag Bravos washing machine. As you'd expect the warranty expired just a few months ago. Typical... #MVWX500XW0, serial #C03634353. Oddly enough the warranty just expired. When the spin cycle starts, it makes a sound that's hard to describe but you can hear it revving up then then sounds like it's going to slow down or stop then rev's up again and it does this several times until eventually the spin cycle stops altogether. When this first started happening after the lock light went off you could hit start again and it would drain fine. Now that doesn't even solve it. I disconnected the drain hose from the back and it's not clogged. I know some models have LED diagnostics that you can run to get clue at the problem but either we don't have that option or I'm just not doing it right.
A side note to this: I just tried running the machine without any clothes in it and I noticed something else. At some point in the spin cycle it started filling up with water again and the lid lock light started flashing then went off. I was actually able to open the lid while it was filling. The machine should not be letting me do that. It should be staying locked. So now I'm wondering if this is part of the problem too.
