Default Whirlpool - Won't Spin
Model Number: LA7780XSWO   Brand: Whirlpool   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

According to my wife (I wasn't home when this happened), our Whirlpool washer made a very loud noise mid-cycle and stopped, dead.

Since then, it will fill up and agitate, but when it comes to the spin cycle, the timer stops moving, and nothing happens. It just sits. There is no noise, no sounds, nothing.

We're graduate students and living on student loans (which are depleted), so any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Check the lid switch. Won't spin with faulty lid switch nor will the timer advance.

Default Found part of the problem, maybe?

Okay, the timer does advance. So, can it still be the lid switch?

Here's the likely culprit, however. I took the casing off, with plans to check the lid switch. Before I started messing with wires, however, I thought I should perhaps see if the tub can turn by hand (I read this somewhere else).

Well, the tub could not be turned by hand. Also, the base of the agitator would not turn either. The top of the agitator did, and would operate on the agitate cycle (but the base stayed stationary).

So, I jiggled the tub around a bit, trying to turn it with a little pressure, and voila... one of my wife's metal barrettes/hair clips popped out. And then, the tub and agitator base would freely move by hand.

So, I'm thinking... hey, that's it! So, I put everything back together, and still, no spin cycle. The base of the agitator now works with the top part, on the agitate cycle--and the timer works too. When it gets around to the spin cycle, it just times through and the machine does nothing. The timer just keeps on turning until it gets to off.

Ideas? Help? Please?
