Maytag ModelLAT9806AAE Agiatates, drains water, won't spin dry. Belts good, motor runs, tested lid switch, seems good. Pulley on bottom of Transmission turns freely in one direction, when turned in the opposite direction goes about a turn then freezes up?. Lid switch is two piece, removed the part with the wiring going to it. Clicks when button is depressed. There are four connections, neut., line, motor, machine. Not sure how to check for continuity?. What's the best way to check for Transmission problem. If that's bad, not going any further.

If motor runs, lid switch is fine. Rotating the main pulley clockwise (viewed from below) should cause pulley to "climb" the shaft and push up on and release the brake so that the basket can rotate. If the pulley climbs the shaft and releases the brake but cannot be turned further, you may have some clothing caught between the tubs. Reach up under and between the inner basket and outer tub cover with your fingers all the way around feeling for anything caught in there. If nothing found, remove the front panel, remove the screws for the top panel and lift it up so you can remove the outer tub cover to be able to see down between the tubs.

Eric I removed the inner tub completely thinking there could be clothing underneath. Nothing found around or under tub. I did not observe, while turning the pulley underneath weather it was moving up the shaft to unlock the brake. I will check that out tomorrow. What is the best indication that the transmission has failed & won't allow the trans to go to the spin mode?. With the tub out the tub bearing & seal is exposed, anything to check there?.

The entire transmission spins during spin mode. It's possible that the tub bearing has seized preventing it from turning. In spin mode, the pulley climbs the transmission input shaft and pushes up the thrust bearing to release the brake while also pulling down on the transmission input shaft. This engages the clutch inside the transmission which locks it so that the pulley, input shaft, transmission and brake rotor all rotate as one. You said the pulley would not rotate very far in spin direction so something is stopping it. It could be the thrust bearing above the pulley, the radial bearing above the brake package or the tub bearing.

Eric Looks like I have a lot of work to do. Good thing I have a back up washer. Thanks for your input.
