I have a Maytag 5000 series washer, about 12 yrs old, so it owes me nothing. But I'd rather fix than buy new.

The warden told me during operation she heard an unusual loud sound, smelled something burning, and the washer stopped in advance of the spin cycle. I turned the selector knob past spin in an effort to drain the tub, and the motor appears to be locked up, as it exhibits a loud hum but does not turn.

Drained the tub manually, then tried again with the same result. Not sure how to troubleshoot it. But something is preventing the motor from turning.

Tilt the machine back and remove the belt by derailing it. Check that the motor pulley and pump pulley rotate freely. Rotating the main drive pulley CW (viewed from below) should cause the agitator to go back and forth. CCW should release the brake and cause the basket to rotate. If the motor pulley rotates freely by hand, try running it with the belt off in both agitate and spin mode. Report back with your findings.

Removed belt. Motor is good. Central pulley turns freely. Culprit appears to be the pump: pulley rotates by hand. But it isn't a smooth, fluid motion. It requires undue effort and feels like I'm making something good in a hand-cranked home-made ice-cream maker. Unfortunately, I'm afraid the reward will not be the same.

Is the cure a full pump replacement?

Pull the hoses (water still in there) and check for a sock or something in the pump, otherwise, replace the pump.

Pulled the pump, and you are correct, sir: The pump has failed. New pump (and belt) ordered.

Thank you sincerely for your assistance and willingness to share your knowledge.
