Hello Appliance Parts Pros,

I began having trouble with my Whirlpool Duet washing machine a couple of days ago. When I would turn it on, all the lights on the control panel would flash, the minutes on the display would change back and forth, and it would beep non-stop. After opening the top and looking inside I found a mouse nest inside the control panel.

There is damage to the white 'cable' that has 8 small wires in it (7 white and one black) - the mouse chewed the coverings off of some of the wires just before they enter the green computer panel/chip. The foam/cotton nest was up against the green computer panel and some of it was slightly stuck. I have carefully cleaned everything off and it appears as though the 'control panel' wire is the only wire/part that has been damaged in the washer. The green panels look ok now that I have cleaned them off (of course they could have damage that I can't see).

Is is possible to replace only the white cable? I can't tell if it is soldered to the green panel because it goes behind it. It looks like I could remove the green panels with a small screwdriver, but I don't know if I should. I have no repair experience. Does the cable and the green panel come all as one unit? Would you recommend I buy the whole part together? Here are the numbers I found on the panels. I did not see numbers on the white cable.

Should I call a professional for help at this point or could I buy the parts and install them myself? I live in the country and many repair people are reluctant to travel here.

Thank you.

Default Update of Whirlpool Duet with Mouse Damage

Of the 8 small wires that feed directly into the control panel 'computer' about 6 of them were exposed, and one of those 6 was broken. We put an electrical connector on the broken one and wrapped all of the exposed wires with electrical tape. We unplugged this white cable at the CCU and plugged it back in. When we plugged in the washer, the 'control locked' light came on. Holding the Pause/Cancel button down 3 seconds worked once, but after the 'control locked' light turned off nothing worked - no lights, nothing. We tried unplugging the washer again and plugging it back in after a few minutes. Again, the 'control locked' light came on, but this time holding the Pause/Cancel button did not turn it off. Could the broken wire have shorted out or 'fried' something on the control panel?

We are now looking for the right screwdriver to remove the 'control panels' and see if they are damaged in some way. Also, I read that the CCU should make a 'click' sound when the washer is plugged in. Should I be checking for this now, or is this something that would also be affected by the control panel issues we are having?

Any suggestions or ideas are appreciated.
