I've been rebuilding the gearcase on a whirlpool WTW5505SQ1. I'm having trouble removing the cover seal - it seems to be attached with gasket sealer and it's coming off in pieces.
Help appreciated.

Hi. There is now gasket between the upper and lower parts of the housing. Use the gasket sealer Part number: 285195
Post the results. Simon.

He's talking about the seal for the spin pinion gear/clutch drive.

Yes, the part I'm having trouble with is part #3 in the diagram (MFG Part Number 3349985) called "shaft seal". It's on top of the gearcase cover and the spin/agitator shaft goes through it. I was able to pull pieces of it off but haven't figured out how to remove the rest of it which seems to be glued on with gasket sealer.

Found a way to do it -- I put it on top of a propane grill. After the flames stopped I saw that what remained of the cover seal had fallen out.
