essentially washer tub will not spin. I understand it may be a transmission problem, clutch, etc. How can I determine what it may be for sure? Is there some sort of quick trick?:)

Is the motor running when it is in spin mode? If so, tilt the machine back and rotate the main drive pulley clockwise by hand. This should cause the pulley to "climb" up the agitator shaft forcing the pulley bearing up against the brake which releases the brake while pulling down on the agitator shaft engaging the clutch inside the transmission. This locks the pulley, brake rotor and transmission together to rotate the basket. If it all won't turn, there may be clothing caught between the tubs or the tub bearing is bad, which is fairly common on this washer. The brake and clutch rarely fail. Also check the glides that the motor slides on. The motor should ride freely on them. They will need cleaning/lubricating if not.
