Washer won't drain and makes a rattling sound like it is trying to. The outlet drains freely though through gravity. Sounds like a pump blockage from the description of the sound produced but would a pump blockage still drain so freely? I have not been able to get it to spin after draining but maybe I am not clicking through the timer correctly. Any help appreciated. I will get the exact model number if needed but I am not with the machine right now. TIA

Well that wasn't it. I replaced the pump and it is still making a loud sound. Kind of a tapping but very fast and loud when it is in the spin cycle on the timer. Any ideas?

Does it agitate ok? Does it spin? When it's in drain/spin, does the motor run? Run it with the cabinet off and lid switch bypassed so you can tell for sure if the motor is running (not just humming). Does the clutch hub spin during spin mode?

Eric I haven't filled it back up with water to see if it agitates. I think the motor is running and is the source of the sound when in drain/spin. I didn't have the cover off but I am pretty sure it wasn't just humming. Anywhere in the drain/spin area of the timer it just makes that awful sound. No pumped water, no spinning or movement that I can discern. Not sure about the clutch hub yet. I did pull off the motor and found the direct drive coupling broken. That would be hard to break just by dropping the motor down, right? It is probably paranoia but I just thought maybe I broke it myself popping off the top clip and the motor tilting to the floor. But I doubt it and I think the video said to do it that way. And the plastic was cracked in half on one of the white parts. So could that be it? The coupling would cause it to make that loud rattle? It makes sense but looking at the setup - even if the coupling is broken shouldn't the pump still run? Thanks again for the help :)

You should not let the motor tilt down, it should be pulled straight off and when reinstalling it, pushed straight on. Tilting it before pulling it off could break the coupler. Yes, a broken coupler can make a lot of noise and it could jam the motor preventing it from draining. You need to run the thing with the cabinet off and lid switch bypassed after you replace the coupler to see/hear whats going on.

I had a Kenmore washer that wouldn't drain. I discovered, under the bottom of the machine, 2 relays that controlled the washing and spinning cycles. The one relay that controled spinning/draining wasn't working. If this turns out to be your problem, turning the machine over will be the hardest part of the job. Good luck.
